SOUTH BEND — A stretch of Douglas Road that connects South Bend to Mishawaka was closed for approximately two hours Tuesday following a serious accident.

Police officers say two cars collided on Douglas between State Road 23 and Grape Road around 9:30 a.m. because of slick road conditions. One of the cars slammed into a power transformer, knocking it over onto the windshield of the car.

The driver complained of back pain after the accident.

That stretch of Douglas was closed to traffic while the power company fixed the transformer. It was reopened about 11:30 a.m.

Good point Cornfusion. I had to reroute this morning because a PHM bus was unable to climb the hill on Ireland Rd between Downey & Clover Rd's. BTW, what goes UP, must come DOWN! I wouldn't want to be driving a bus full of kids approaching an icy intersection, especially coming down a hill. Good luck and God Bless all of our bus drivers this winter. It seems the county has your work cut out for you!

I cannot believe how people tailgate you if you slow down due to poor road conditions. Some SUV was up my hind end all the way to work today because I DARED go 35 in a 50 with slick roads.

I was driving on Douglas the night before and my car was sliding all over the road. Luckily there were no other cars near by. It was possibly the worse road out there last night and this morning since that was the only road I had problems with.

I do believe the alternative to salt is UREA. Its a by-product that we need to get rid of anyway. MMishawaka and Elkhart roads are 3X better than South Bend.

At nine thirty is too early to have wrecks of any kind. This driver probably was going to fast for the icy roads ahead then hit the pole and came down on to him. I hope there was no injuries. This stretch of the road is very slick so drivers have to be extra careful because if you are slow the driver behind you is in a hurry and tries to pass you and while doing so the car spins and end up in a ditch or if speeding hit a pole or a house causing injuries to himself and others. Drivers slow down.

Yes, let's just saturate the whole road network with tons and tons of salt. Then the environmentalist nutjobs will be crying that all the salt runoff will kill fish and plants and ruin the environment. Here's the way to stay safe: Stay home if you don't need to go out!!!!!!!!!!!

The roads have been much slicker than normal and I have not seen a plow using salt yet. In prior years the plow blade cleaned the surface and salt followed to keep it clean. That is NOT happening this year. I travel Cleveland Road/State Road 23 from Granger to the bypass and it has been a slush ice mix until the sun melts it all season. Anderson, Brick and Currant Roads are all just sheets of ice. Lets enjoy 4 more years of Mitch's "miracle" government.

Go look at elkhart county roads they are always better than st joe counties roads.

Some of you dolts just don't seem to be able to grasp the concept that it is virtually impossible to salt every single square inch of every road in the county. You seem to insist that every road needs to be completely clear of snow and be completely dry. Just ain't gonna happen, anywhere. It's your responsibility to slow down and be careful. If you can't do that then please stay off the roads!

Seriously...I don't know where Holy or Poor Bill live but I have not seen a single plow or truck laying down salt since the season began. Bill you are not the only one wondering where the salt is. Apparently the price of salt has risen 3 times...I ask myself isn't there more salt on the planet than anything else (other than the water that contains it)?

The salts on the street Bill...The vehicle came to rest at the Telephone pole which is normal on grass, which is normally not a driving surface for vehicles....Clean your glasses

Bill, do you own the salt concession? Or do you just have no grasp of basic physics?

I hope everyone involved is okay! Also I see a carseat in the picture. I pray that the child was either not in the vehicle at the time or is also safe! I fear driving everyday with my child. It's very scary out there this time a year. PLEASE SLOW DOWN! Don't assume it can't happen to you! It can and it will!
