MISHAWAKA — The economy, increased competition, higher taxes and the smoking ban all contributed to the scheduled Wednesday closing of the Mishawaka Brewing Co.

Co-owner Rick Schmidt says food will be served Monday and Monday night, and then the kitchen will close. The owners only plan to serve drinks Wednesday, before the doors are locked.

Located for the past 16 years at 3703 N. Main St., the Schmidt family has decided to close the restaurant but continue operations at The Pub at 408 W. Cleveland Road, near the corner of Grape Road.

Brewing and bottling will continue at the production center in Elkhart, and beer will still be available for carryout at the brewery and The Pub.

"Under the current conditions, we decided that it was time to pull the plug on the life support," the owners stated in a press release.

Schmidt said sales this fall were the lowest ever for the restaurant. "Things have been doing down for a while, and have gotten worse with the economy. We’ve known for a while but just finalized the plan," he said. "We’ll still be around on a smaller scale."

You can read more about the local restaurant closing in Wednesday’s South Bend Tribune.

I am sad. However. The food was meh, the beer VERY expensive, which is why we only ever went on half-off day ($9 a pitcher, not good). The social scene there was usually always very 'crunchy' and when smoking left, most of the regulars left..i was happy as smoking IS a public health issue, but a place trying to be upscale only attracted distinctly downscale people--no college kids besides us ever, no whitecollar people semiever...i never saw it full in 4 years as a regular, dont blame smoking..

Look. I used to work there for many years so I know why this business failed. It was staffed with great people when I worked there. Over the years the staff left and they never recovered. The Management was never there. What kind of restaurant manager doesn't work nights and weekends? Ii always saw this as a problem. Management is to blame. People want quality food, affordable prices, friendly staff and access to Management. That's the bottom line...

If you ever got sick after eating there its because the kitchen is filthy, I have heard it is routine practice to serve bad food there.

Well I went there on 2 separate conditions. I don't think the smoking ban had anything to do with closing MBC. I think they closed due to their prices and not everybody had a taste for Irish cooking. I myself try to keep an open mind about ethnic foods. So I am neutral on this closure.

Bans drive customers away. If just one in a group says they won't go to any place where a ban is in, the group goes elsewhere, like someones home for the festivities. Free Enterprise does NOT exist any more. Nannies do exist.

Smoking bans eliminate customers, businesses, and jobs...period. In Minnesota, smoking bans closed 269 establishments eliminating 10,000 jobs prior to our economic downturn. In fact it is more accurate to say that anti-business smoking ban legislation caused our current economic slowdown: http://cleanairquality.blogspot.com/2007/01/100-bars-and-restaurants-put-out-of.html http://cleanairquality.blogspot.com/2008/12/minneapolis-st-paul-hiring-freeze-tough.html

Rather odd how a supposedly bad business could stay open for 16 years? If it was as bad as what some of the comments are I'd logically think they would have been closed years ago or shut down by the health department? Ooops I forgot the Health Department Is out looking for cigarette butts not spoiled food or moldy bread! Think about that for a few bites at your next restaurant you go to! Buckeye Lake Truck stop closed in part because of the smoking ban!

Differant businesses have their own personalities and atmosphere. Each place has it's own appeal to a differant customer. If you tell 20 to 25% of the population that they are no longer welcome then their favorite businesses may get hurt quite badly. If, you are unable to connect the dots, perhaps this will help. It is America after all. One size does not fit all. Would you want all restaurants to serve Thai food only?

Sorry Freethinker I can't explain why "every" business is not closing. I'm one who doesn't know everything just bright enough to connect a few dots once in a while. Maybe you can explain everything to me using this forum, but go slowly for my benefit.

Blutnick asked, " Is it wise and/or necessary for the anti-smoking coalition to contribute to the destruction of a 16 yr old business?" . . . . . . Blutnick, businesses destroyed, jobs lost, and lives destroyed are considred to be nothing but "collateral damage" and "(un)foreseen consequences" to the Antismokers. Somehow they managed to be successful for 16 years prior to the smoking ban. I am so sorry to hear they are closing. Smoking bans can be devastating for small business owners. Just ask Ohio.

Their food was so expensive thats why people left and went somewhere else. Besides no one is making a lot of money now so lets go the get some boos. Of course the liquor store will do well. When depression hits then there is always a relief at the local bar and there are a lot patrons out there where they got tons of money I dont know from where but the bucks shows up for everything including the expensive champaign and the gin. I am sure they are gona be doing well there. Good luck

The food was terrible, calling the beer average is a compliment, and both were overly priced. The staff also was very average. There was no atmosphere. When I went there I didn't feel like I was in a brewery. I felt like I was in just another restaraunt. I'm not sad to see this place go.

Well, it's too bad, you never want to see a local business close, but we went there 3 separate times in the 2 years after they opened, and we got poor service, and bad food. Salad dressing was bad one time and mold on bread the second. The third time they took the sheperd's pie back three times to heat it up because it was cold in the center, and it was still cold. They had great beers and root beer, but poor food.

It's too expensive to go out to eat all the time. I'm sure many more smaller restaurants will be closing soon. I can eat at home for a week on what I would spend for a typical meal at MBC or Fridays/Chili's/}insert restaurant chain here}.

I quit going there years ago because the food was disgusting and the beer was over priced. Not to mention the staff was very rude!

Lou is right. Blutnick, every similar business has the same conditions. Blutnick, explain why every business in not closing.

Tuesday, Dec 2 at 3:21 PM Blutnick wrote ...

Really, higher taxes contributed to the financial problem? Doesn't our local government believe higher taxes are the means to solve their problems? Also, really why can't a bar choose whether to go smoking or not smoking and the customers use common sense on where they want to go. Is it wise and/or necessary for the anti-smoking coalition to contribute to the destruction of a 16 yr old business? I detect disconnect here somewhere.

About time. The Food is overpriced and not very good, and the craft beer very average. Out of town visitors I've taken there have even walked out without finishing the food!!! Cant wait till Mad Anthony's opens a satellite in Elkhart. Now they know how to run a brew pub!!!

How sad this is. Not only was the food and beer great...they had a great staff! My brother recently began playing there with his band. They will be truly missed by myself and other loyal customers.
