MISHAWAKA — At the Brew Pub in Mishawaka Tuesday morning, Amanda Havens was busily chopping mushrooms, preparing for lunch.

“One of our biggest sellers is our bacon cheddar mushroom burger,” said Havens.

The problems is, they aren’t selling enough.

“Buiness has just plummeted,” said owner Tom Schmidt. “Normally we’d do $5,000 on a Saturday night. We did $900 last Saturday."

So after 16 years in business, Schmidt, his son, and a team of others worked to disassemble the brewery. It’s moving to the family’s other brewery operation in Elkhart to consolidate. The restaurant on Main Street is closing for good.

Schmidt attributed his decision to a number of factors including higher property taxes, a county smoking ban, and increasing competition up the street.

“When we opened, we were the only one on Main Street this side of Mishawaka,” said Schmidt. “Now you look up the street just at the next intersection, there are 10 restaurants clustered around.”

Many of those restaurants are part of national restaurant chains with much deeper pockets.

“We were able to kind of hang in there and infuse a little extra money into it to try and keep going but with this latest downturn, forget it,” said Schmidt.

Havens, who is a single mom, wiped away tears as she talked about leaving.

“I have a 7-year-old … she comes to work with me (sometimes) and that’s what’s nice about having a small company is they invite your kids and they’re welcome," she said.

She’ll apply for unemployment next week.

“The economy's so bad you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow," added Havens.

The Pub at Cleveland and Main Street is also owned by Mishawaka Brewing Company and will stay open.

as far as im concerned smoking is and isnt part of the problem here and in the past year the service has never been better. i myself acquired over 200 regulars which regularly came in and helped me in more ways than just tipping me. how about the way the place was ran...music was ran out, customers and employees were underappreciated, the beer continuously went down hill. on top of all that the way that the employees found out was highly disrespectful.

I worked for the family and they are good people. I worked at both MBC and The Pub--I know the owners cared about their employees and guests. It is a shame the brewery closed but I know they made the decision after careful thought. It is a tough industry. They where open much longer than most places. Those who bad service didn't have me taking care of them, but in the time I worked there I knew everyone I worked with to give good service. Those who complained maybe had too many Seven Mules.

Actually Smoking Ban the Brewery and Pub both illegally sell cigarettes from behind the bar (at least the did). As for rights...Shouldn t the owner of an establishment have the right to decide if they want to allow smoking or not. Perhaps they would lose business, perhaps not. It should be thier freedom, like it is your freedom to not patronize the establisment.

I don't smoke and I personally don't like going to a restaurant and leaving smelling nasty and have to wash everything. For those of you that say you have rights and should be able to smoke last time I checked you go to a restaurant to buy what they have to offer. I haven't seen one yet selling cigarettes but i have seen them selling acholol so lets see why would it be right for a person to drink alchol in a restaurant that sells it but not smoke in a restaurant that doesnt sell cigarettes. hmmm

I am really getting tired of the "Smoking thing" I smoked for several years, and quit only because it was my choice. I don't mind being around smoke, actually I enjoy it. To some this might seem crazy, but it's true. You know we ALL have rights, if you don't want to Smell it, then move. The Smokers should have rights too! I don't drink alcohol, so what right do I have to ask you to go to another restaurant because you drink? It could be unhealthy for me too, especially if you drink and drive.

Wednesday, Dec 3 at 11:34 PM Schmidt Head wrote ...

Don't turn this into an examination of the smoking ban. I don't smoke, don't care if others do. I don't feel threatened by going to a restaurant that allows smoking. The Mishawaka Brewing Co. is not a casualty of the smoking ban...of course Tom would say so, he's delusional. Non-smoking doesnt kill restuarants, Restaurants kill restaurants.

I'm surprised that the pub didn't close earlier. This really did have among the worst service of any restaurant I've been to. To kathy: if they lost customers, that's because the customers are ego-centric sorts who have the "it's all about me" complex. Their zealous disregard for their own lives through smoking have saw it fit to "not patroize"? Nah. No way. if a business has good service and you like the people there, you'll come back whether there's smoking or not. And the restaurant owners I've talked to saw their business rebound.. mostly because of quick turn and cheaper overhead w. less cleaning.

Its sad to see local businesses close, but the one time we visited the service and food quality was so deplorable that we never went back. 20 mins. to have drink orders taken, another 15 to get them and have food order taken, then 30 more to get the food, which was not as described on the menu, and cold. The server disapppeared, we had to physically get up from the table to find him for the check, then it took 20 min to get it, and he never bothered to come back. On a Wed. night by the way!

Smokers are one of two people. They are the ones who work hard to make ends meet or they are the ones who need the smokes to cover up an underlying problem that is happening or has happened to them. Maybe they tip more maybe they don't. I can tell you there are more non smokers than smokers in our society. If they tip well, great but that is because they sit longer, and non smokers who stay longer tip better as well. So your point of the ban doesn't add up. Let me guess, YOU SMOKE 10:17.

Anon, I do not recall stating anywhere that I smoke. I however have friends who do. Who like to go to an establishment and have a cigarette after they eat, or while they are having drinks. They work hard for their money and feel that they should be able to spend it where they can socialize without restrictions being placed on their enjoyment. Of course the economy, higher taxes, poor customer service play a role, just as the smoking ban does. Many businesses HAVE lost customers due to this!

As a server in the community, I have seent he smoking ban lower my tips and sales as smokers tend to stay longer, spend more, and tip better. I am tired of the 'water only' people, that share a meal, and then leave me two bucks. Table turnover means nothing when you making lousy tips, or there are no people to fill the tables. The ban is lousy, as people CAN and DO go to establishments they can smoke at. Business has NOT returned since the ban was implemented.

This doesn't really surprise me. I was never a huge fan of their beers, and the customer service was horrible. I'm with a group that does monthly meetings and we'd go to Brew Co. once or twice a year, and even if we were the only people in the whole place, they still would not split our bill if we had more than 8 people. Stuff like that can turn people off in a hurry.

To Kathy: Con't We can debate this here, if you want. The fact is, I have facts. What do you have? There are couple off issues here: Customer service goes a long way to determine if people comeback. If the Brew saw a downturn in customer service, why? Analyze the situation... Speaking from a completely economic POV, cost of goods are up, property taxes, down turn in the economy. And sorry, if you have to smoke after eating, then pay and leave. Don't make me sick w/ your smoke. 'nuf said.

Kathy: Fort Wayne had a complete smoking ban long before St. Joe county did. Businesses at first, saw a downturn, but over time people came back. They noticed a couple things after a year of having no smoking: (1) they saw lower cleaning bills (ie, smoke leaves a lot of residue on seating, tables, walls, lighting fixtures and other items in the restaurant) and (2) they saw a quicker turn of tables, which resulted in more money flowing in.

I like the bar and the restaurant's food, but haven't been back since a string of bad experiences with the the staff ending in my 45 minute wait for kid's chicken finger, a Red Devil and a burger this past June ...

QUIT blaming the smoking ban people. Smoking had nothing to do with this. It's just plain simple economics, the country in is really bad shape right now, and EVERYBODY is suffering. Oh and don't think that the $4.00 plus a gallon gas this past summer didn't have anything to do with the economy, because it sure didn't help matters. what's next is someone going to blame the Notre Dame football record for their having to close down? The smoking ban has nothing to do with the pub closing. I love beer and I do not smoke but I never drank at bars because of the smoke. Now I can. I have eaten at this pub and paid a lot of money for mediocre food, poor service and decent beer. There is better food and beer elsewhere and that is where my business went. I have gone to other breweries that serve great food and beer and you have to wait in line to get in. And...get this - these places are smoke free. What a concept.

I could give much input into this!! Maybe the economy would be a little better off if there weren't smoking restrictions "county wide!!"

It is sad to see a locally based business have to leave because of the huge franchises. And the no smoking ban (sorry, but alot of people who like beer like to smoke! Proven fact!) Higher property taxes, they are hitting all of us, unfortunately! I just love those public officials that think they have all the answers when deciding what a business can do with "their" business! Look at SB Speedway. It became non-smoking and now is closed! You can't tell me this had nothing to do with it!

I'm not too excited about going into the Pub after having experienced the poor service and inconsistency in the quality of food. There are plenty of restaurants around that are independently owned not only competing but shining over the national franchise eateries. No, the problem isn't economy or competition, it's attitude and the Brewery's was that they were a local place with a special twist and could coast on that assumption. Good luck with the Pub. I hate to see local places not succeed.
