SOUTH BEND — Charlie Weis’ week in coaching no-man’s land has ended suddenly and awkwardly with the University of Notre Dame issuing a prepared statement Wednesday announcing that the embattled fourth-year Irish head football coach will return for the 2009 season.

An athletic department source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed Tuesday night that Weis had been informed he will return for a fifth season after sitting in limbo since Saturday night’s 38-3 beatdown by fifth-ranked USC in Los Angeles.

The university made it official late Wednesday morning. The statement said Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick made the decision in consultation with university president Rev. John I. Jenkins. Swarbrick and Weis met in California on Tuesday to review this past season, discuss plans for 2009 and communicate the A.D.’s decision, the statement said.

“Though this past season fell short of the expectations that all of us have for our football program, I am confident that Charlie has a strong foundation in place for future success and that the best course of action is to move forward under his leadership,” said Swarbrick.

“He, I and the others involved in leading our football program are committed to doing everything necessary to ensure a successful 2009 season. We are examining every aspect of the program and will make changes wherever we think they are needed.”

The one-sided setback to USC Saturday night gave Weis four losses in ND’s last five games, a school-record-worst 9-15 mark over a two-year stretch and a 28-21 overall record in four seasons. It also fueled rampant speculation that the university might devour the seven remaining years on Weis’ contract as well as a sizable buyout.

The Irish (6-6) are expected to receive a bid Sunday to either the Sun Bowl (Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas) or one of a number of the others that are near the bottom of the bowl food chain.

Weis, recruiting on the West Coast, could not be reached for comment. He is due back in South Bend Thursday.

The news couldn’t come fast enough for a recruiting class that was being poached by virtually every college in the country. The feeding frenzy may continue, but it’s a class that if it stays together, will be Weis’ fourth straight to rank in the top 10 nationally.

His mission in 2009 will be to get his actual team to rank in the top 10 nationally.

After a 5-2 start this season, the Irish turned schizophrenic — blowing double-digit leads in losses to Pittsburgh and Syracuse and nearly doing the same against Navy. Their other losses in the final five games — to Boston College and USC — showed disquieting flashes of 2007, when ND finished 3-9 and with the worst offensive showing in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Heading into the Syracuse game, Nov. 22 at Notre Dame Stadium, Swarbrick’s wait-and-see statements had evolved into something that resembled a whole-hearted endorsement. But then the Irish fell to the then-2-8 Orange on Senior Day, the first time the Irish have ever lost to a team that finished its season with eight or more losses.

Suddenly, the heretofore accessible, quotable Swarbrick went silent. Saturday night after the USC game, though, he broke his silence, sort of.

The only real concrete declaration to come out of the impromptu meeting with the media outside the ND locker room was that he would sit down with Weis Dec. 8 to evaluate the program — and not before.

It has been widely speculated that there will be several changes in the assistant coaching staff at some point this off season, and the today’s statement didn’t contradict that notion.

The team’s annual banquet is Friday night at the Joyce Center, with former ND standout quarterback Joe Theismann serving as guest speaker. All but two of Weis’ nine assistants have also been out recruiting.

The Irish open the 2009 season Sept. 5 at home against Nevada.

I have been an avid ND fan for over 30 years, however, the last 14-15 years have been really disappointing. ND simply has not been a very good program since 1993 under Lou Holtz. I really don't understand it because they have to have talent. The last 2 years have been flat out awful. I know they are young, but I don't get a good feel for the direction the program is heading. They didn't belong on the same field as USC - What is going on?

Keeping Charlie Weis another year insures another mediocre season for the Notre Dame football team. Way to go Charlie.

I'm glad they're keeping Charlie, he can recruit the talent! But, he really needs to get some assistants on offense and a quaterback coach! And a kicker would be good! Or maybe someone to smack Jimmy upside his helmet, and get all of that hot air out of there, and maybe he will realize that he's not the best thing that has ever walked on ND campus! Not even close,he really needs to get his head on straight, or benched. With a Montana coming up, he should be nervous!!

Please note:, Charlie has always been an ASSISTANT (when winning), NOT a LEADER. Now that he is a Leader, does he win, not with his attitude. When he went back to calling the plays the last 3 games, it was worse than ever... does he really have the ability ... I think the players have the ability, not the coach. And how about the assistants ....

so sick of the stupid people who make this a race desicion. Willingham is 0 and 12 at Washingtion...0 and 12. He was headed down. Weiss while having a rough season is headed UP. Not a good year but better than last.

Please Do not recruit any "Jimmy prima donnas." Jimmy should have been benched at USC. Also, get rid of Pawlus.

Good call by the AD. Charlie deserves another season WITHOUT a lot of static from the alums.

I say keep him. I am enjoying this self appointed genius flounder. You reap what you have sewn.

Oh by the way, besides getting a new QUARTERBACK...get a new KICKER that can make fieldgoals....

Wednesday, Dec 3 at 1:49 PM John wrote ...

Good call, but Charlie, you need to change your quarterbacks, or sit him on the bench so he quits thinking he is all that and a bucket of chicken...Good luck

This decision was very simple. The difference between WHITE and BLACK.

Okay, Charlies stayin, how many of his assistants who think so much of him will do the same?

With Weis as head coach I don't understand why ND thinks he can get it together. He's recruited some good talent, but doesn't seem to be able to grow the team. I'm predicting another losing season for next year.

This is great news for all the teams that N.D. will be playing next year.

To bad he isnt on his way out. He sucks as a coach and so does the team all around. I have never been a fan of NO GAME and never will.

I smell a National Chamionship. Too much adversity, and worst to first stories are always a recipe for an ultimate season. Just wait, these boys(&coach) are hungrier than ever, and when your back is to the wall is when your most dangerous, if you have that special integrity inside. We will truely see what this seasoned bunch is made of, and I am looking forward to it, but 1st things 1st, Go Cubbies!

I WOULD SAY THAT A DEAL WAS STRUCK, IN WHICH CHARLIE & THE IRISH NEEDS TO MAKE A BCS BOWL, OR HE HITS THE ROAD. BUT, REALISTICALLY THE IRISH SHOULD BE 9-3, BY WINNING THE 3 GAMES THEY TOTALLY GAVE AWAY, AND THAT'S NOT BAD. BUT FACT IS 6-6 IS UNDERACHIEVING, AND I'M CERTAIN THAT ANY REAL COACH WILL TAKE ANY BOWL INVITE AT THIS POINT TO GET ABOVE .500, AS I'M SURE THE IRISH WANT TO DO. SO TAKE THAT BOWL INVITE & GO KICK SOME BUTT.....FOR 4 QUARTERS!

GREAT decision for ND. Give the man a chance to win with SEASONED veteran players...like he did his first 2 years. The kids he won with were ones that were thrown into the fire early in their careers under Willingham...they were always winners, just young. Same thing with this group of players, they are winners, it's a learning curve and I believe ND will be back on top again next year with Weis as the head coach. I don't like the man, but next year will prove his worthiness.

Bad call, I hope they mean they're going to hire a real head coach in, and keep Charlie around holding the new coaches headset wires, maybe he'll learn something then.
