SOUTH BEND — On Thursday morning drivers had to deal with some icy roads.

Police say that's one reason behind an accident that sent two people to the hospital. It happened around 8:30 a.m. at Hickory and Edison roads, which is at the border between South Bend and Mishawaka.

Police say the driver of the car was going too fast. She tried to stop at the light, but ended up rear-ending the van in front of her.

The two people inside went to the hospital with back and neck pain.

Responding officers had a tough time because the roads were so slick. They requested salt for the area.

I hope everyone recovers fully from their injuries. Keep in mind icey roads do not cause accidents people cause accidents. God cannot prevent accidents. People can prevent accidents.

Alright, so what you are telling me is; when it snows, or rains even, and also when it is cold, like this morning, the stuff freezes and creates "ice"? And this ice stuff is very slick? And everyone everywhere should be very careful because of it? By golly I think I've got it! No one, ever, has told me that before. This is brand new information! Thank you WSBT and EMT responders. Had you not informed me, all of us really, I wouldve gotten into an accident for not knowing that ICE IS SLICK

What? To everyone: It's winter, if you can't handle it, don't drive. Get a ride to work, or ride a bus. I lived in the country and those roads stayed icy for days before salt got there when the county and city HAD some. We learned to drive on it if we had to go somewhere. People need to stop complaining and find some common sense. Geez, the IQ of the entire country just keeps dropping. We live in a FREE country, it shouldn't be the government's job to keep you safe. You have a brain, USE IT!!!

We are always prone to accidents and this one is the one that kill or maime people. We love to have ice skating rings and no one is excempt to paying tazes. Why the salt is not over some roads? Check my spelling you spell sicko.. doo gooders are always running on the saving grace of Jesus Christ and if they had no luck then end up in a hospital with broken ribs and twisted neck. Go back to the bar where smoking will cause you the get cancer in the pancreas and you wont be able to breath anymore.

I'm sick of idiot cops and emergency crews and city officials always, always blaming bad drivers, going too fast, etc. for accidents. Guess what: to have a functioning economy people must drive. And often, you can be going slow and careful and if it is icy, an accident can happen. You can be going 5 m.p.h. and if you are on ice - you'll slide. So shut up that it is always drivers. Plow the roads. Salt the roads. Quit whining about lack of funds. I'm sick of it. Thank you and good night.

I am going to put spikes on my tires so I can speed up and slow down a lot better. Then if someone runs in front of me I can make hamburger of them and I won't have to slide by the grocery store......That sound stupid? I thought so too but with how some people drive around here what do you expect, BRAINS?

As I read this story I have to wonder if the woman driver going too fast was driving a gray/blue mini-van. I was behind one this morning from Miami to past Jefferson, she was quite ahead of me until the lights held her up, she she was on a mission and drove through the school zones, yellows, and just speeding. I could not keep up, nor did I try, but I was hoping to because I was going to call her driving in. So, lady..if you reading this, maybe you will slow down

Hey Rick, what about the ones following WAY TO CLOSE, I figure if I can see road between us they are too close and if traffic is slow I can't clime over the car in front of me!! And yes, I agree on ice u don't have to be going fast

OK. Exclude driving too fast. How many out there just don't understand winter, wet, dry conditions? They are all different. Too many underestimate their vehicle & what they can do with it, under the conditions. What irks me are the people that stop soo close, that I can't even see their headlights in the rear view mirror of my truck. I inch up........they inch up. Sorry, that I am in front of you. Your drive to/from work or the store....isn't supposed to be a race.

I agree, there is no need for that. There is no need for many comments when people get angry with one another. We can all express our opinions diplomatically, can't we? She was going fast, but does that mean that everyone who drives and wrecks on ice is going fast???? We can't make assumptions because of some isolated instances.

"She probably was not only going to fast, she probably was talking on the phone and putting on her make up at the same time. Her knees where driving the car, not her hands." Can we say stereotyping? There is no need for that.

The truth is that you do not have to be driving fast on ice to get into an accident. You could truly just be trying to stop at a stop sign and begin to slide, or you can be trying to take off from a light and slide into something. Or how about when you are trying to turn a corner and your tailend begins to slide. None of these things have to involve speeding. It just needs to be salted to help for us drivers whether speeding or not speeding.

It isnt just the fast drivers it is the fact that bosses dont seem to be the least bit sympathatic when you show up late due to the roads. In some places you can get fired if you show up late no matter what the excuse. Surring this time of year there should be a good 15 to 20 minute window to get to work, but there will always be that one dumb dumb who will abuse it..just slow down if you can!

Thursday, Dec 4 at 12:12 PM G wrote ...

I see only 1 problem with the road conditions. People are driving too fast! No one is invincible with a vehicle on black ice-not even those of us with 4X4's. I own a 4X4 and was driving about 30 going in this morning! Police should be out ticketing these idiot drivers who insist on acting like morons and risking lives of others b/c they either couldn't get their lazy butts out of bed 15 minutes early in order to leave earlier or whatever other lame brain "excuse" they have.

NOticed the story said that the women was going to fast and rear ended another car. She probably was not only going to fast, she probably was talking on the phone and putting on her make up at the same time. Her knees where driving the car, not her hands. I have seen people do this all the time and I stay away from them, because they are an accident looking to happen and I do not want to be the one they hit.

PLEASE everyone slow down to prevent tragedies! Also, c'mon counties/cities...get some salt...messing with peoples lives is not the way to survive the budget crunch!!! This is why I was so ticked off that one govt entity has the funds to handcuff/take dogs/raid and arrest 20yrs olds for a couple beers at a private residence (no drinking and driving) yet other govt agencies can't keep the main roads safe thereby endangering our lives. Safe roads should be a PRIORITY!

Thursday, Dec 4 at 11:43 AM Tam wrote ...

The County is not cutting back on Salt to save money the price for salt went up almost double in price and they don't have the money in there budget to buy more! And the county and the city are two different things, the city is where the accident happen it is there responsibility to salt those roads. The county is more less in the country and those roads where fine coming to work. Get your facts straight Chris before making comments you know nothing about!

Thursday, Dec 4 at 11:42 AM OMG wrote ...

I have to agree with "Praying" - I don't care what you drive it is NOT made for ice! Leave early - get there a few minutes late - but please be careful and not cause accidents.

Thursday, Dec 4 at 11:41 AM Chris wrote ...

By shorting the streets on salt you really put everyone in danger, because everyone has to drive on those icy roads. Schoolbus's, policeman, fireman, EMS, street department, Semi-Trucks, Parents taking their children to school. Everyone is at risk.

Thursday, Dec 4 at 11:16 AM Chris wrote ...

The county thinks they are saving money by cutting back on the salt. Thats not true if accidents keep happening and emergency crews are called. By them cutting back on the salt its bad for the city and citizens.

Thursday, Dec 4 at 11:11 AM Praying Driver wrote ...

Please slow down out there.... I seemed to be the only one driving slow this morning. I thought I was the only one who saw the black ice on the roadways early this morning. Although I was driving slow, many other people continued to do the Speed Limit or higher. You really have to watch out for other drivers who may slide into you. May God give you all traveling mercy today. Be blessed!
