MISHAWAKA — Dozens of laid off H2 workers headed to work Monday — rehired by AM General to work at the military Humvee plant.

Some of the 80 employees laid off in August were eligible for employment at the H1 plant. AM General said it would offer opportunities to as many laid off workers as possible — this time that's 31 people.

UAW representatives were happy for those who were rehired. With so much uncertainty surrounding the U.S. auto industry, the UAW is very grateful that half of its membership has been recalled for work.

“In this troubled economy, this is excellent news,” said Don Taber, chairman of the UAW.

About 80 H2 workers stopped coming to work back in August after their jobs were cut.

“And we're very sorry back in August that we weren't able to find places for everybody,” said AM General’s Craig Mac Nab.

But they did have preferential hiring status, as former AM General employees and workers who met hiring qualifications made some employees eligible to make the move.

"They'll now have a job to come to and be employees of the H1 facility," Taber added.

“We were able to offer some people, some positions, but not everybody,” said Mac Nab. "This now brings everyone who was eligible back to work now in one capacity or another.”

Mac Nab said new business opportunities and a staff reorganization made the rehiring possible.

Those 31 workers are set to begin their new positions in just a few weeks. They're meeting with AM General officials and union representatives to learn more about their new job responsibilities.

“The group we had this morning is very excited to be returning to work,” said Taber. “We have some more we're going to work on them.”

The UAW says it will continue looking for opportunities for the rest of its membership.

“We'll take them one at a time, but we'd like to get them back, also,” added Taber.

UAW officials say there are still about 47 laid off H2 workers waiting for work.
