SOUTH BEND — A University of Notre Dame committee created to review campus safety and hospitality for football weekends will present it recommendations in March.

The 10-member committee of employees, alumni, security officials and one student has met twice via conference calls and once on campus in recent weeks to discuss football weekends. The committee will continue to meet second semester and plans to offer recommendations in the spring to the Rev. John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president.

Jenkins formed the committee in October after discussion on campus, on the Web and in the Observer, the campus newspaper, suggesting campus police and stadium ushers had been cracking down harshly on perceived misconduct by tailgaters and fans.

There was additional controversy at the Nov. 22 Notre Dame-Syracuse game, the final home game, when some students threw snowballs, including some that hit Notre Dame football players. A season-high number of 22 people were ejected from the stadium during the Syracuse game, the campus security police told the student paper.

The university for years has had high-powered security cameras in the stadium that allow officers to zoom in for close views and video recording of fan behavior.

The university this fall created a Web site — www.nd.edu/gameday — where anyone can log in and offer observations and suggestions or express concerns about specific incidents.
