SOUTH BEND — The unemployment line isn't getting any shorter these days. But the news, is not all doom and gloom. Some companies are looking to add workers. From education to technology, nearly a dozen careers are showing a promising outlook.

The health care sector is one field where the need is growing.

"There are several sectors that are experiencing growth," said Tracie Davis. "The state expects them to continue to grow especially in our region."

The list for in-demand fields goes on and on.

"Nurses are very versatile in their jobs skills and because of that, we find there's an increase demand for their skills," said Annette Peacock-Johnson, Associate Professor of Nursing at Saint Mary's College.

"We could always use phlebotomists, pharmacy technicians, lab techs and pharmacists," said Cheryl Wibbens, VP of Medical Affairs for Memorial Hospital. "There's a wealth of opportunity out there for anybody who's interested."

"I think a lot of that is due to the population aging," she added.

Manpower's Employment Outlook reports growth in education, technology and business, too.

Officials at Ivy Tech Community College have noticed an increased in students studying in those fields.

"We try to steer them to jobs or careers that result in jobs after graduation or completion," said Davis. "There's is hope — education is the key."

Davis adds that many of the in-demand fields require coursework that can be completed in two years or less; others only require certification.
