MUNSTER, Ind. (AP) — The Indiana Department of Transportation is soliciting bids to build and operate a fiber-optic communications link along the Indiana Toll Road.

INDOT Deputy Commissioner Carl Bruhn says fiber-optic corridor would bring advanced broadband Internet service to businesses and communities along the 157-mile highway across northern Indiana.

He says it would cost a private company up to $15 million to build the fiber-optic line. The winning bidder would pay an annual fee to the state and have the right to collect fees from users for 25 years.

Bruhn says licensing fees would allow the state to establish fiber-optic corridors along other state highways.

ITR Concession Co. paid the state $3.8 million three years ago to lease the toll road for 75 years.
