SOUTH BEND — Two people are dead and two others injured after a two-vehicle crash at Cleveland Road and Nadine Street Wednesday morning.

Two vehicles were involved in a T-bone-style collision near Castle Point apartments at approximately 11 a.m.

Police said a vehicle traveling eastbound on Cleveland lost control and crossed the center line into the path of a westbound SUV.

When officers arrived, the driver of the eastbound vehicle was in "very critical condition," and was then pronounced dead by first responding fire and medical personnel arriving at the scene. The front seat passenger was taken to Memorial Hospital in critical condition, and later pronounced dead.

The two people in the westbound SUV were taken to Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Road conditions were a factor in the crash, according to Sgt. Bill Redman of the St. Joseph County Police. The road was "like a skating rink," he told WSBT News at the scene. Emergency personnel had difficulty walking at the scene due to the icy conditions, he added in a press release.

The names of the deceased, both of Dowagiac, Mich., will be released after family is notified. The occupants of the SUV are from South Bend.

Ice, snow and speed are also being blamed for a string of at least three other accidents along Cleveland Road between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

South Bend and St. Joseph County police reported accidents near the intersections of Portage Road, Buckeye Road and Ralph Jones Drive on the city’s northwest side.

Police report minor or no injuries in most of the accidents, although a woman was temporarily trapped inside her vehicle after it went off the road and rolled on its side near Portage.

Icy weather was blamed on a fifth accident, another vehicle rollover, near the intersection of Douglas and Fir roads, but police report no injuries in that crash.
