KINGSBURY — A LaPorte man is accused of causing the deaths of his 14-year-old daughter and his cousin’s partner in a Thursday drunken driving crash.

Fourteen-year-old Brooke Hine and 32-year-old Robert Kampf of Stillwell were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 38-year-old Donald Tharp of LaPorte, was taken to LaPorte Hospital.

''He was conscious when he was loaded into the ambulance,'' said LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner John Sullivan.

''I did smell and physically see open containers of alcohol in the car,'' Sullivan said.

Donald Tharp’s aunt, Connie Tharp, said her nephew was transferred from intensive care to a regular room but police at his door were not letting anyone inside.

''Nobody is allowed to see him,'' Mrs. Tharp said.

Mrs. Tharp said Kampf was the father of her grandchildren.

Donald Tharp had a blood alcohol level of 0.29-percent, or nearly four times above the 0.08-percent blood alcohol content legal limit, according to police.

Kampf had also been drinking, with a 0.22-percent blood alcohol content, Sullivan said.

About 8:30 p.m., LaPorte County Police and other emergency responders were called to the 300 block of East South Road 400 South.

A westbound 1996 Eagle Talon driven by Tharp reportedly hit a large pine tree in the front yard of Loretta Rudolph, the Washington Township trustee/assessor.

The crash left a large debris field consisting of car parts, including the fender and bumper.

''It looked like the hood of the car flew onto the porch. It tore that car right apart,'' said Dorothy Kramer, Rudolph’s sister who lives across the street.

The vehicle came to rest upside down and, when uprighted, resembled a smashed in accordion.

''That's too bad. The poor innocent girl,'' Kramer said.

All three occupants were pinned inside the car and extricated by members of the Pleasant Township and Kingsbury volunteer fire departments.

Hine was a backseat passenger, police said.

Kampf was riding in the front passenger seat, police said.

Police said all three occupants were wearing seat belts.

Mrs. Tharp said Donald Tharp and Brooke’s mother were not together.

Brooke, along with her 15-year-old sister, lived with their father on West 18th Street.

''It's terrible. A total nightmare,'' Mrs. Tharp said.

LaPorte County Police Capt. George Ritter said charges were expected to be sought after the investigation is complete.
