Berrien County presses on with ‘No Cigs For Our Kids’ campaign

By WSBT 24/7 News

BERRIEN COUNTY — The multi-agency “No Cigs For Our Kids” campaign is tallying its successes and prepping for continued efforts in 2009.

The campaign began several years ago with the goal of reducing youths’ access to tobacco. To date, the tally stands at nine employees cited at area businesses for selling tobacco to minors and two employees cited for illegal single cigarette sales, according to a press release from the Berrien County Health Department.

The campaign’s “Designated Youth Tobacco Use Representative for Berrien County” visits businesses where improper tobacco sales have taken place to teach employers and their staffs about the Tobacco Act. Aspects of the Tobacco Act include not selling or giving tobacco products to minors and prohibiting selling cigarettes singly, both misdemeanor offenses.

The Berrien County Health Department along with Benton Charter Township Police Department, Benton Harbor Police Department and St. Joseph Township Police Department are promoting the “No Cigs For Our Kids” campaign. Businesses were notified random Tobacco Act enforcement checks would occur throughout the year.

Ultimately, the health department and local law enforcement’s goal is all businesses and employees will be compliant and no citations will need to be issued in future years.
