BREMEN -- The wintry weather is also causing big problems for neighbors. Thousands of people across the area are still without power. People in Bremen are bundling up and preparing for the worst.

High winds, heavy snow, and subzero temps, welcome to the official start of winter.

"Oh, it sucks. I work outside sometimes and I hate the cold," said Bremen resident, Bill Eggert.

But, for Bill Eggert it wasn't just cold outside.

"The house was freezing no electricity," said Eggert.

And he certainly wasn't alone.

"So I got up at about 7 and about 7:20 the power went out," said Bremen resident, Michael Hundt.

At one point, the whole town of Bremen lost power Sunday morning. Police say nearly seven-thousand people in the city and surrounding areas were in the dark and the cold.

"The cold temperatures along with the ice that we've got over the last couple of days are causing the trees to sag onto the lines and lines themselves to actually come down into each other," said Breme Police Department Patrolman, Nick Spade.

NIPSCO crews worked throughout the day to restore power to customers. But the weather proved to be a challenge.

"About 9, 9:30 the power came back on. And then it went off again," said Hundt.

"We've lived in Indiana our whole lives so we're used to it. My sister, she just insulated her house, so they just blowed insulation in it, so it's pretty warm in there," said Eggert.

But others say they have some concerns.

"For any elderly that if it goes out tonight it's just too cold out to survive in this kind of weather," said Hundt.

Police are urging people to check on their neighbors especially if they're elderly. Bremen Hospital and the Bremen Doctors Hospital are opening their doors to those who don't have a warm place to go.

At this time, NIPSCO does not know when power will be restored to all customers in the Bremen area.
