NEW CARLISLE — State police say four young people were killed when their car crossed the median on an icy Indiana Toll Road Sunday night and was struck by a semitrailer. Two of them were Marine Corps reserves.

The four young adults have been identified as: 23-year-old Aaron F. Esposito, of Novi, Mich.; 20-year-old Kyle Sporleder of Sylvania, Ohio; 19-year-old Lauren Diefenthaler, of Ypsilanti, Mich.; and Rodney M. Echelbarger, of Holland, Ohio.

Police say there was snow and ice on the road when the car crossed from the eastbound into the westbound lanes and crashed about 8:15 p.m. Sunday on the Toll Road near New Carlisle, about 10 miles west of South Bend.

Esposito was the driver of the car, police said. Police did not have an age for Echelbarger.

Echelbarger and Sporleder were both lance corporals in the Marine Corps reserves, but neither was in active service, according to Capt. Nathan J. Braden, with Marine Forces Reserve Public Affairs.
