Several local county governments will receive funding through FEMA’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

The money — awarded to social service agencies — will be used for food, shelter, rent, mortgage and utility help for people in non-disaster related emergencies.

FEMA’s grant criteria is based — in part — on the number of unemployed and number of people listed as “below poverty level” in each county, according to a press release from Indiana Sen. Dick Lugar’s office.

Counties, amount received and agency involved are as follows:

  • Elkhart County, $161,490 (United Way of Elkhart County)

  • LaGrange County, $28,120 (American Red Cross, Howe)

  • Lake County, $258,015 (Lake Area United Way)

  • LaPorte County, $73,715 (Springfield Township Trustee)

  • Miami County, $29,056 (American Red Cross, Peru)

  • Noble County, $40,132 (United Way of Noble County)

  • St. Joseph County, $190,293 (United Way of St. Joseph County)

  • Starke County, $18,157 (Community Services of Starke County)

  • Steuben County, $26,907 (Community Action of Northeast Indiana, Angola)
