A 27-year-old Niles woman died Wednesday night when she made a left turn, into the path of a vehicle that was attempting to pass hers.

Cass County Sheriff’s Department is reporting Rachel Leazenby was eastbound on Hospital Street near Mullen Road in Cass County’s Jefferson Township just after 7:30 p.m., when her vehicle collided with one driven by Thomas Gleason, 19, of Cassopolis. Police say Gleason was trying to pass Leazenby’s vehicle.

She was taken to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, where she was pronounced dead.

Neither Gleason nor his passenger, Danielle Fester, 19, also of Cassopolis, were injured, according to police.

The sheriff’s department is continuing to investigate the accident, but say alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
