SOUTH BEND — Firefighters spent nearly 40 minutes Wednesday night putting out a house fire in the 600 block of South Walnut Street.

Firefighters were dispatched around 6:19 p.m. and arrived to see heavy fire coming from the back, said Kevin Kolber, battalion chief.

Roughly 33 firefighters responded to the scene, where onlookers stood in the freezing temperatures and stared as smoke rose into the air. Several people hugged and consoled a man who cried and watched his home from a distance.

"They had a couple pets that didn't make it," said Kolber. "There were no humans inside — thank God."

Strong winds from the west made it harder to control the fire, which was contained to the building and caused quite a bit of damage because of the smoke throughout, Kolber said.

Investigators were still working to determine a cause of the fire.
