Driving conditions on the Indiana Toll Road are improving as the temperature continues to rise, Indiana State Police said at 2:15 p.m.

By that time, the outdoor temperature in South Bend had risen above freezing, to 34 degrees.

The Toll Road was closed to traffic earlier Friday after dozens of crashes and slideoffs caused by icy conditions.

The tollway is fully open and the number of reported accidents has decreased this afternoon, police said.

Motorists still are being urged to drive slowly and with caution, because patches of ice remain. Governmental officials in St. Joseph County and several other area counties are urging people to stay off the roads unless travel is essential.
