SOUTH BEND — St. Joseph County declared emergency travel conditions Friday, along with Elkhart and LaPorte. All have since lifted that status.

Officially, St. Joe County designated it a "snow emergency," even though there was no fresh snowfall. What it means is that the county was strongly discouraging motorists from driving, and asking people to stay home if at all possible.

The emergency declaration in St. Joseph County came later than those in Elkhart and LaPorte counties.

Mark Dobson, president of the Board of County Commissioners, said the delay was because the roads here were in better shape, comparatively. The late declaration was to prevent people from neighboring counties from streaming into St. Joseph County.
