Chimney fire spreads inside house

Penn Township firefighters work on a fire that started in a chimney on Birch Road.

By WSBT News1

A house fire this afternoon started in the chimney as a family stayed warm.

Several departments arrived at the house on Birch Road in Penn Township this afternoon to help.

The fire started in the chimney and spread to the interior of the house.

No one was injured in this fire, but it can be dangerous trying to put out a fire yourself.

Penn Township Deputy Fire Chief Raymond Schutlz says, "Number one you could hurt yourself, it's hard to have the right equipment, the right tools, and the expertise to do it correctly. So although the fire may be contained in the chimney, it'll stay there until it breaks free and once it breaks free it's too big for you to control anyway."

Schutlz says the best thing to do is get out of the house, call 911 and close the doors to help prevent more oxygen from getting to the fire.
