Wacky winter weather frustrating many drivers across the area

From sub-zero temperatures to snow, then an ice storm and finally 60 degree temperatures and thunderstorm watches. South Bend has seen it all this week.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY — It's been a week of wacky weather across the area. From Saturday's spring-like temps to snow, sleet, and freezing rain, it's been a mess out there. Drivers just wish Mother Nature would make up her mind.

From heavy snow and sub-zero temps one day, to freezing rain the next.

"It's horrible. That's the best way I can describe it," said driver Tory Hawkins.

The weather is being blamed for thousands of power outages and hundreds of accidents.

"The driveway was all ice and sliding around yesterday morning trying to do some returns and about got hit by some crazy drivers," said driver Harvey Shick.

The wacky winter weather continued Saturday. This time a bit more pleasant. Drivers woke up to what looked like a typical spring day, 60 degree temps and rain.

"I'm glad I didn't have to shovel anything," said driver Tate Brummitt.

"It was great, loved it. My kids are wanting to go home and play outside," said Shick.

Saturday's 62 degree high is nearly 30 degrees warmer compared to this time last year. And snow fall totals are also much higher. This time last year it snowed 15 and a half inches in South Bend. That number has more than doubled this year, bringing the total to 33 inches.

So what's behind this up and down pattern? Well, drivers have their own theories.

"Maybe it's global warming," said Shick.

"I think it's an Indiana curse," said Brummitt.

No matter the reason, drivers just hope Mother Nature will make up her mind for good.

"Well, I'm hoping we don't have anymore of this rain then freeze. Either it just snows and it stays nice and snowy so we can just have fun playing in that or it just warms up and stays nice. But we can't have that here in Indiana," said Brummitt.
