SOUTH BEND — Residents whose recyclables normally are picked up Tuesday and Wednesday are advised crews will still be coming around this week to pick up what was missed last week.

Lisa Disbrow, a spokeswoman for Waste Management Inc., said crews are working today and Tuesday to pick up items that weren’t picked up last Tuesday and Wednesday.

However, if your normal pickup day is Thursday, Disbrow said, you will need to hold your recyclables for the new company that will take over the job Jan. 1.

On Thursday — Jan. 1 — Borden Waste-Away Service will take over.

Confusion cleared ...

Disbrow admitted the company’s customer service representatives had told callers the company would not go back and pick up items missed last week.

"I’ve got that corrected," she said.

Disbrow said that because of the weather, trucks were pulled off routes last Tuesday and Wednesday. Nothing was picked up Thursday because of the Christmas holiday, and weather kept crews off the roads again Friday, she said. That meant recyclables normally picked up Friday were picked up Saturday, she added

Disbrow said recyclables needing to be picked up have to be placed outside.

She noted that recyclables will be picked up on their normal days through Wednesday.

Mark Mehall, director of the Solid Waste Management District of St. Joseph County, said the district has a contract with the Waste Management company through Wednesday and expects the company to fulfill it.

The district awarded the contract to Borden beginning in 2009.
