Elkhart County police arrested two people early Tuesday on preliminary charges of manufacturing methamphetamine and neglecting children in a home in the 57000 block of County Road 13.

The house is within 1,000 feet of Concord East Side Elementary School.

It was at least the fourth suspected meth lab raid in the region in the past two days.

Acting on information gathered by Goshen police, two Elkhart County sheriff’s deputies arrived at a home about 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, according to police. A woman opened the door and spoke with an officer, who reported smelling the odor of caustic chemicals.

Arrested were a 28-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man on preliminary felony charges of methamphetamine, neglect of dependents, maintaining a common nuisance and outstanding warrants.

Two babies — ages 19 months and 7 months — were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for examination due to possible exposure to the chemicals, police said. The Indiana Department of Child Services was notified.

The Indiana State Police meth suppression unit assisted with the investigation.

Authorities were called to the 300 block of Thayer Street in LaPaz about 9 a.m. Monday because of suspicious items in the house. State police assisted Marshall County police with the meth investigation, which resulted in five criminal arrests, a Bremen Post dispatcher said.

About 10 p.m. Monday, the unit was called to a Marshall County site to clean up trash items associated with meth production. That case, near the intersection of 14B and Nutmeg, was followed by another trash cleanup near 10B and County Road 17.

Four people were arrested Monday at a house in the 1000 block of East Winona Avenue, in Warsaw, after a sheriff’s deputy serving eviction papers discovered a suspected methamphetamine-making operation in a home.
