PLYMOUTH — A natural gas leak in downtown Plymouth Tuesday disrupted school bus service and kept students from walking home to the area.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. confirmed that a reported leak caused the closure of Liberty Street from LaPorte Street to the railroad tracks, and Pennsylvania Street from West Street to Michigan Street.

Plymouth schools tried to notify parents of the need to pick up students who typically ride a bus or walk to the area, but students whose parents couldn’t be notified in time were bussed to an after-school program at Webster Elementary, according to a press release from the school corporation.

A NIPSCO spokesperson said a team from South Bend had been dispatched to work on the problem, and no one had been evacuated.

Plymouth Schools Supt. Dan Tyree said NIPSCO notified the corporation of the leak at 2:20 p.m., and school dismisses at 3 p.m.

“We had 40 minutes to put together a plan,” Tyree said. “They said it was a dangerous situation.”

Tyree said NIPSCO officials told him they expected to have a welder repair the leak soon and that school transportation Wednesday morning should not be affected.
