SOUTH BEND — The city of South Bend is asking residents and businesses to help remove snow from fire hydrants near their properties. If there’s an emergency, access to a fire hydrant will be critical for first responders to act quickly.

For those with physical difficulty clearing the snow, call the mayor’s office at 235-9954 and leave a message with the buried hydrant’s location.

The city is also recruiting volunteers to assist with snow removal. Any person or group interested in volunteering can call 235-9261 to sign up.

The city is also reminding residents to clear sidewalks on their properties to create a safe environment for children walking to school, and workers such as utility locators, postal workers and newspaper delivery people.

Businesses and residents are responsible for clearing snow and ice on sidewalks adjacent to their properties within 24 hours of accumulation by city ordinance.
