SOUTH BEND — For years it's been a Hoosier tradition, especially in the south central region of the state. But it wasn't until last week that sugar cream pie was officially named Indiana's state pie.

"I think it's great," said Craig Rumpf, owner of the Country Bake Shop on S.R. 933. "I think any help the baking industry can get in Indiana is a great thing, I'm all for it."

Rumpf says the pie comes from the Amish and Shaker communities and was a staple after the fall harvest, when all the fruit was gone.

"When they would run out of apples and fruit from the fall harvest then they would start making these pies when winter would start and around the holidays Thanksgiving and Christmas," he explained.

Wick's Pie Company in Winchester is famous for the pies, making more than 750,000 each year.

Senator Paul Allen and Representative Bill Davis brought the resolution forward, which was approved by acclamation on both chambers on the January 23.

According to Rumpf, if you follow this simple recipe you should be able to make your own sugar cream pie:

Combine with your hands 3/4 cup sugar, 5 tablespoons of flour, 2 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream at room temperature, 1 teaspoon vanilla and add to pie shell. Sprinkle nutmeg on top.

Bake for 10 minutes at 450 degrees then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 60 additional minutes.
