Investigation gets pure, potent form of meth off streets

ELKHART — After months of investigating, Elkhart County police have three suspects in custody and more than a million dollars worth of Mexican meth, or ice, off the streets.

Heather Wortsbaugh's children play outside Friday, but it wasn't the snow and sleds keeping their attention Thursday night.

"Last night we saw helicopters and SWAT teams out," Wortsbaugh said.

All part of a Mexican meth raid inside a home, yards away from their windows.

"[The kids] were quite excited, wondering what's going on," she said. "We didn't suspect anything. There was no suspicious activity from just driving by."

Oswaldo Quizaman, 29, was arrested there. Elkhart County prosecutors say Quizaman shared the home with a woman and their four children. Police say there were three small children inside the home during the raid, where thousands of dollars in cash, drugs, and ice were found.

Police arrested a second suspect, Miguel Esqueda, a few miles away at Ricky's Taqueria in Elkhart.

The raid continued at a business on North Main Street in Goshen and a third suspect was arrested on Prospect Avenue also in Goshen.

"This particular raid last night produced some very interesting results," said Curtis Lee, Elkhart County Prosecutor. "We found approximately 18 pounds of Mexican meth, or ice, at one location."

The drugs were not processed in a meth lab locally. Prosecutor Hill believes the ice was manufactured in Mexico and brought here.

"The demand is here, and certainly Elkhart County is a distribution point for other locations," Hill said.

With evidence and information collected, Hill says more suspects will come to light.

"Right now you're going to see a lot of people looking for the rabbit hole, going to hide," he said. "We know who some of those people are and we'll continue to pursue them."

Miguel Esqueda and Oswaldo Quizaman are in police custody, in lieu of $5 million bond. A third suspect arrested Monday is also in jail.
