Authorities say three people were airlifted to the hospital after a head-on collision on U.S. 6 Saturday night.

The two-vehicle crash happened just before 8 p.m., about four miles east of Goshen near County Road 127, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

Police say Pamela Carlin, 24, of North Webster, was headed west on U.S. 6 and hit a pile of drifted snow that caused her to lose control of her vehicle.

Carlin's Buick Regal hit head-on an eastbound Jeep Cherokee driven by Thomas Vargovich, 21, of Syracuse.

Carlin, Vargovich and a passenger in Carlin's vehicle were all flown to Parkview Hospital for treatment.

Vargovich was listed in serious condition Sunday morning, while Courtney Knisley, 26, of Syracuse, was in fair condition, according to nursing staff.

There was no immediate word on Carlin's condition.

It was one of several accidents county emergency crews handled, the Elkhart County office said.

In a separate crash, an SUV struck a pole along County Road 46 near New Paris about 8:40 p.m.

At least one person was taken to the hospital as a result.

Emergency dispatch said road conditions were deteriorating as increasing winds blow and drift snow. Kosciusko County also reported slideoffs and accidents.

In St. Joseph County, two people had to be extricated from a vehicle along Indiana 2, between Tulip and Snowberry Road, after a 6:22 p.m. accident. The road was shut down while crews were working, police dispatch said.

Two people were injured, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Also shut down was the St. Joseph Valley Parkway, about 7 p.m. near Mayflower Road.

Police told WSBT-TV a car was driving westbound near Mayflower Road when the driver lost control. The car flipped over the median and landed in the eastbound lanes, causing a chain-reaction accident with four other cars

The road was closed for a couple of hours, but no one was seriously hurt.

Later, six cars were reported in a ditch after slideoffs at Jackson and Peach roads, St. Joseph County 911 dispatch said.

There were no reports of injuries, but because of drifting snow, police elected to take a Hummer rather than standard patrol car out to investigate the 11:20 p.m. report.

By the time they arrived, neighbors equipped with plows and tractors had pulled out the drivers, authorities said.

Authorities said that in areas like Crumstown, wind blowing across open fields was beginning to make driving treacherous.

The National Weather Service said southerly winds of 15 to 25 mph was expected to create drifting problems, with travel especially difficult along east-west roads.

Conditions were expected to become increasingly slick, with some roads expected to be impassable.
