Traffic conditions calmed down some overnight, but heavy snow to the west of South Bend was expected to create new problems Wednesday morning as people head out on the roads again.

A lake-effect snow warning has been extended until 4 p.m. EST for LaPorte, Starke, Pulaski and Porter counties in Indiana, and remains in effect for Berrien County in Michigan, the National Weather Service said.

"In western LaPorte County, there could be some isolated reports of up to 20 inches by the time it's winding down," said Patrick Murphy, a meteorologist in the Syracuse office.

Some of the heaviest snow was expected in Porter County and into the Valparaiso area, while there was already more than a foot reported in San Pierre by midnight, and poor conditions all along U.S. 421.

Starke County dispatch said the North Judson area was especially hard-hit, and Pulaski County reported heavy snow in the western part of the county, too.

At the Porter County 911 center, emergency dispatch staff watched snowfall totals in Chesterton make national weather headlines on TV — and said that many roads were impassable, if not officially closed.

Fortunately, no serious accidents because of the storm had been reported before 4 a.m. Michigan State Police reported an accident on Interstate 94 near the Niles exit.

And LaPorte County authorities said they were "inundated" with slideoffs and trapped drivers in the western part of the county, with estimates of 16 or 18 inches of snow on the ground by midnight. Two truck drivers were unable to reach many vehicles, though conditions had improved enough to clear most roads a few hours later.

Toll Road conditions had improved as well, said Indiana State Police. A number of slideoffs and accidents were reported between mile markers 30 and 40 in LaPorte County Tuesday night, resulting in traffic delays.

A winter weather ban on affected doubles, triples and other affected semi-trucks was in effect until 8 a.m. EST Wednesday.

Elsewhere, ISP at the Lowell post said the southbound lanes of I-65 near Crown Point were closed briefly around 11 p.m. CST because of a multivehicle accident involving semis. The road was cleared later and no serious injuries were reported.
