MISHAWAKA — A relative of one of the two people who escaped from the basement of a burning house late Thursday, told WSBT-TV that smoke detectors did not go off.

Still, two people in the house, and a pet dog, escaped unharmed from the house in the 14000 block of Douglas Road.

Fire crews were called just after 11 p.m. County police shut traffic off between Capital Avenue and Fir Road while fire crews were at the scene.

No information is yet available as to the amount of damage or the fire’s cause.
