DOWAGIAC — A Dowagiac man and woman stabbed in their home late Saturday have been identified as Robert Kirkland, 78, and Clara Peters, 50.

The two remained hospitalized Monday at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, but a hospital spokesman said he could not provide further information.

Dowagiac Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson also identified a suspect picked up in Herculaneum, Mo., in connection with the crime as Kevin Williams, 41, of Dowagiac. He described Williams as an acquaintance of Kirkland and Peters but said the motive remains unclear.

Williams is charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and one count of unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, Atkinson said. Williams was still being held in Missouri Monday pending extradition to Michigan.

Atkinson said authorities in Herculaneum picked up Williams after he stopped to get gas and a clerk at the gas station became suspicious. The auto he was driving belonged to an another acquaintance in Dowagiac, Atkinson said.
