SOUTH BEND — A St. Joseph County home-detention officer charged with a sex crime could not attend his initial court hearing Tuesday because he was recovering from knee replacement surgery, the man’s attorney told a judge.

Andre Lawson, 42, of Granger, was charged in January with sexual misconduct and attempted sexual misconduct, both Class C felonies. The charges are in connection with a monitoring visit to a woman’s home.

Lawson has been suspended from his job without pay.

His court hearing in front of St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Jerome Frese was reset to March 31.
