A Michigan Department of Transportation driver plowing snow and another motorist collided Saturday night, sending two people to the hospital.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Department said Thomas Dunkel, of Galien, lost control of his vehicle about 6:15 p.m. along U.S. 12 near Hampton Road at Galien, crossed the centerline and hit the westbound plow.

Both Dunkel and a child passenger in his vehicle were taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment.

Dunkel was listed in critical condition early Sunday, according to Memorial nursing staff. No information was available on the passenger's condition.

The plow driver was not injured. Police say the driver attempted to avoid the crash without success.

The accident remains under investigation and alcohol appears to be involved as a factor in the crash, Berrien County authorities said in the press release.
