MISHAWAKA — Our neighbors aren't the only ones in need. The tough economy is also impacting pets. Now one local girl is sacrificing something most kids could never imagine to help animals across the area.

Food, family, and friends — all the makings for the perfect birthday party. Well, almost.

For the third year in a row, 9-year-old Katrina Kulczar isn't getting any presents. Instead, she's asking her friends to bring food. Pet food, that is.

"I love to do this because it makes me feel better,” said Katrina, “because I don't really need as much as they do."

With two dogs, two goats, and a cat, Katrina has been an animal lover since she can remember. And after reading a story about service dogs, she was inspired to start collecting donations for Pet Refuge.

"Oh, I think it's awesome. I'm so proud of her," said Katrina's mother, Christine Kulczar.

Christine wasn't surprised by her decision.

"It's rare for a kid,” she said. “It's not rare for Katrina. She's always about everybody else.

The need at Pet Refuge is greater than ever before. Donations are down about 20 percent. At the same time, the number of animals being dropped off is going up.

"We've had a lot of really responsible pet owners lose their jobs, have to move in with relatives or friends and need us to take their pets," said Karen Pugh, Pet Refuge cat coordinator.

It's the reason small sacrifices like Katrina's are certain to go a long way.

"It makes me feel really good," said Katrina.

Katrina also volunteers at Pet Refuge.
