SOUTH BEND — We are learning more about the man police continue to search for as a person of interest in Tuesday's abduction. They are looking for 48-year-old Michael Lindsey, who lived in South Bend.

Lindsey lived with relatives in South Bend but has not contacted them, according to police. They are cooperating with law enforcement. As of right now, Lindsey is not believed to be in the Michiana area.

"He's a nice guy,” Andrew Brinker told WSBT News.

The nice guy Brinker is talking about is Michael Lindsey — who lives next door to him in the 500-block of Logan Street in South Bend. Police say he's a person of interest in an abduction.

"Very good neighbors," he explained. "They've never said anything to us or done anything to us, just kind of ‘hi’ and ‘bye,’ and they shovel our walkway whenever it needs to be done."

Brinker had no idea Lindsey is a convicted sex offender. In 1983, Lindsey was sentenced to prison for two counts of rape and one count of child molestation in Elkhart County, but was released last July.

"I'm shocked to hear that he's a sex offender,” Brinker added.

Police want to talk with Lindsey about the abduction of a 19-year-old woman Tuesday in Mishawaka. The woman's mother told WSBT News a man got in to her daughter's car in a parking lot off Edison Road and demanded she drive him out of town because he had done something really bad.

A few hours later, the man let her go in a rural area of White County. She was not hurt.

According to the victim's mother, the abductor thought the victim was traveling with an iPod but in reality it was an iPhone, and police were able to use the GPS inside the phone to recover her vehicle.

Brinker says knowing what he knows now about his neighbor has him thinking differently about the area.

"I feel kind of better now that I am moving, otherwise it's kinda bothering me now," he said.

Police believe the same person may also be behind two attempted abductions earlier on Tuesday.
