KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — Officers made two arrests after evacuating children from a home filled with concentrated meth production fumes, say police.

Two Kosciusko County deputies responded Friday afternoon to anonymous calls about a strong odor near a home on the 7,000 block of Heritage Drive in Pierceton.

The deputies identified the smell of methamphetamine production coming from a window of the home. Inside they found two children, ages 6 and 7, and 41-year-old Dennis Rigleman, say police.

The three were immediately evacuated due to the strong gases. Officers also found multiple cats that appeared “lethargic from the fumes,” according to the news release.

Police say a loaded .22 caliber rifle was found placed near an open window.

Tara Shepherd, 28, arrived at the scene and identified herself as the mother of the children, both of whom were put into the custody of Child Protective Services.

The suspects are preliminarily charged with child neglect and possession of methamphetamine precursors. Both had bonds set at $5,000.
