High winds, a tornado, flood warnings — and police say there were even a few scary moments near Nappanee Sunday night, too, when they were dispatched for a rescue when a vehicle drove into high water along County Road 13.

The Indiana State Police were called at 8:37 p.m. to assist Nappanee emergency workers, who closed down the road while making sure the vehicle occupants were able to get out safely.

The road was closed between County Road 52 and County Road 54 during the incident.

It was just one of countless weather-related calls area emergency dispatchers across Michiana reported, with flooding chief among them.

In South Bend, the intersection at Northside Drive and Roberts Street was blocked early Monday because the St. Joseph River had crested its banks and flooded the road. Minor flooding is expected along the river this week in other locations, too, including Niles and Elkhart.

In St. Joseph County, authorities said flooding at New and Elm roads had made the intersection impassable. It was the same story in Marshall County, where Indiana 10 is closed between U.S. 31 and 331.

Berrien, Elkhart, Kosciusko and Fulton counties reported dozens of locations where high water was flooding roads and making them impassable.

The heavy rain arrived with severe weather, which prompted a number of severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings Sunday.

Hardest-hit was Columbia City in Whitley County, where the National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado tore through the Countryside mobile home community, near the intersection of U.S. 30 and Indiana 9.

Authorities say the tornado — with winds of 105 mph — damaged about 25 homes, completely destroying three of them. The storm's track was about 1.5 miles with a maximum width of 100 yards, NWS said late Sunday.

Columbia City and Whitley County authorities say the community remains closed until Federal Emergency Management Agency officials arrive, and most residents were staying with family. There were several minor injuries reported after the tornado, Columbia City dispatchers told SBT24/7 News.

One person was seriously injured near North Manchester, however, where straight-line winds reached about 70 mph and caused significant damage to barns and trees, NWS reported.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the victim.

Those high winds caused havoc elsewhere as they raced across the state. Two semi-trailers were flipped, according to the Indiana State Police at Lowell Post. The first occurred along Interstate 65 in Jasper County, with the second further south in Benton County. Police said no one was seriously injured in either incident.

And closer to home, those winds brought down trees — including one in the 1700 block of North Elmer Street in South Bend — and knocked out power. While most customers in Mishawaka and Elkhart County had power restored early Monday, Kosciusko authorities said crews were still fanned out across the county trying to restore electricity.

At the height of the outage, 3,000 customers were in the dark in Kosciusko County. Starke and Fulton County authorities said some still remained without power there, too, especially in the Talma area.

Authorities expected to hear more damage reports Monday, along with more reports of road flooding and closure.
