The rainy downpours over the weekend totaled more than 2.5 inches Saturday and Sunday in South Bend.

And more is on the way.

About 1.13 inches of rain was recorded Saturday at South Bend Regional Airport, and 1.39 inches on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Here are other regional rainfall totals for the weekend:

-- Goshen: 2.17 inches

-- Benton Harbor: 2.21 inches

-- North Webster: 2.65 inches

Monday should remain mostly dry, but more rain and possible thunderstorms are possible tonight and Tuesday morning, said Jon Chamberlain, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in North Webster.

"There’s the possibility for heavy rain, a situation similar to what we had over the weekend," Chamberlain said. At least an inch of rain is expected through Tuesday.

If temperatures had been colder, that 2.5 inches of weekend rain might have translated to about 20 inches of snow under optimal conditions, Chamberlain said.

Snow fell over the weekend in northern lower Michigan, bringing about 15 inches to the Traverse City area, he said.

North central Indiana remains under a flash flood watch. Returning rain combined with saturated soils from the weekend rain could cause flash flooding, according to the Weather Service.

Some area rivers are near or at the flood stage.

There is a flood warning for the St. Joseph River in Elkhart. The river is expected to rise above flood stage in Elkhart this afternoon and crest near 24.5 feet early Wednesday. It is expected to subside to below flood stage by Saturday afternoon.

Here is the weather forecast for the next few days:

Monday will be partly sunny with a high near 48.

There will be showers and a possible thunderstorm Monday night and early Tuesday, with possible heavy rainfall. Tonight’s low will be about 41 degrees.

On Tuesday, there will be occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a high near 58 degrees.

Rain showers will continue Tuesday night and early Wednesday, with a low around 30.

Wednesday will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 35 degrees.

Daytime temperatures later this week will range from the mid-30s to mid-40s.
