PLYMOUTH — The Yellow River is still rising and it could be another day before the worst of the flooding materializes, Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter said early Wednesday morning.

"The main problem is what's coming from the north, from the river itself, and we've just got to monitor that," said Senter.

The mayor expects the river to crest at 15 feet sometime early Thursday morning. During last January's flood, the Yellow River crested at 14 1/2 feet.

Residents in Plymouth have already begun filling sandbags and placing them around their homes.

"The sandbags really help keep the water away from the home, " said William Bergin as he filled bags with sand and threw them in his car.

Bergin said he's just taking it as it comes.

"As long as it happens once a year and as I'm building my property and putting more soil in certain areas I think I'm going to be workable, but yeah it comes to spring every year and you think, 'Here we go again!'"

Bill Gee also lives along the river and is hoping this flood won't be as bad as the last.

"it was 15.4 feet last time, this time it was going to be 15 feet — that's four to five inches and that's going to be different," said Gee.

Mayor Senter was urging residents to protect their homes if necessary.

"If you really think there is going to be a problem in your home or neighborhood,” said Senter, "there are two piles of sand — one right across from the Boys and Girls Club, and one at Hoffman Brothers Auto-Parts Store, East Garro Street.”

Senter said city officials will met early Wednesday to talk about a possible incident command center, and whether evacuations will be necessary.

Wednesday afternoon the mayor announced the American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at the First United Church of Christ at 321 N. Center St., Plymouth.
