Cat perishes in South Bend house fire

A house fire Thursday afternoon in the 1500 block of South Webster Street was caused by an electric space heater, according to a fire department report.

Though no humans were in the house at the time of the fire, about 1:20 p.m., a cat in the house perished. Firefighters found fire in the living room of the house and extensive smoke damage throughout the structure.

The fire department report estimates $20,000 damages to the single-story house and contents.
