Two Goshen men were canoeing on the Elkhart River in Goshen early Tuesday afternoon when the canoe capsized, plunging the men into the hydraulic backwash from the Goshen Dam.

One of the men, Glenn Schumacher, 24, is listed in critical condition at an area hospital, according to an Indiana Conservation Officer’s report.

The other man, Nicholas Loewan, 25, told a Conservation Officer he was under water for several minutes before he was “spit out and away from the low head dam.”

Loewan told the officer he swam about 20 feet to shore and then saw Schumacher about 20 feet out into the river, floating downstream. He yelled to a woman on the shore to get help and he dove back into the water and pulled Schumacher to shore.

Both men were taken to Goshen General Hospital, according to the Indiana Conservation Officer’s report. Loewan was treated and released. Lifejackets were in the canoe, but, according to the report, the men were not wearing them.
