Firefighters had to deal with high winds, but those winds were too much to save a barn near Berrien Springs.

The fire broke out just after 5 p.m. on Shawnee Road, near the Berrien County fairgrounds.

All that's left tonight is a pile of rubble.

The homeowner told family members he had emptied ashes from a wood stove yesterday and dumped them on a leaf pile today.

Those leaves apparently caught fire and blew into the barn.

Family members tell WSBT-TV they're just happy the house was spared.
