GOSHEN — Glenn Schumacher, 24, who was injured when a canoe capsized in the Elkhart River last month, is improving and has been removed from the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Schumacher is expected to make a full recovery, according to Goshen Police Department spokesman Joe Brown.

When the canoe capsized, Schumacher and Nicholas Loewan, 25, were plunged into the hydraulic backwash from the Goshen Dam. Loewan swam about 20 feet to shore, yelled for help, dove back into the water and pulled Schumacher to shore.
