NEW BUFFALO — Opening the scales for truckers on Interstate 94 paid off Monday with the discovery of more than 600 pounds of marijuana allegedly hidden in a sophisticated compartment in a semitrailer.

Michigan State Police said vehicle and driver records indicated the semi driver, a woman from the Detroit/Flint area, had stopped near Phoenix, and was returning to the Detroit area to deliver her load. She was lodged in the Berrien County Jail on a drug charge.

Police said the MSP Traffic Safety Division was operating the scales for eastbound traffic about 3:20 p.m. at Mile Marker 2 when a motor carrier officer observed obvious brake-system violations on the tractor-trailer.

After ordering the vehicle into a staging area for inspection, the officer noticed discrepancies in the driver’s statements and the log book, police said, and asked for assistance from other law enforcement officers.

A search by a canine unit from the Bridgman post indicated the presence of drugs which were turned up in a subsequent search., police said.
