SOUTH BEND — Several departments responded Wednesday night to a fire at Castle Point Apartments.

The fire broke out about 9:40 p.m. in a second-floor apartment on the far-west side of the complex.

Clay Fire Territory Marshal Dave Cherrone said the fire started in kitchen and then spread to the rest of the apartment, causing severe damage. The apartment’s three occupants exited safely, he said.

The fire was contained to the apartment where it started, he said, but smoke filled a good portion of the building, leading to its complete evacuation.
