Teen helping out dies after being hit in Michigan City wreck

By WSBT 24/7 News

U.S. 20 was closed for four hours Friday night after a fatal accident at the intersection of U.S. 20 and Franklin Street, Michigan City police report.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at about 9:15 p.m. They found a 15-year-old underneath a car in the eastbound lane of U.S. 20; he had been helping to clear the disabled car from the road, police said.

A sport utility vehicle driven by a 54-year-old woman collided into the rear end of the car, trapping the teen underneath, police said.

The teen was freed from underneath the car and transported to Saint Anthony’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

The woman was treated and released from Saint Anthony’s, police said. Police say drugs or alcohol don’t appear to be a factor in the wreck.

The identity of the teen is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police continue to investigate the accident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Loniewski of the Michigan City Police Traffic Division at (574) 784-3221, extension 319.
