New Paris man run over, dragged by pickup truck

A 20-year-old New Paris man was critically injured after a pickup truck ran over and then dragged him early Saturday morning.

An Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department report indicates Austin Weaver was trying to stop Jason Finch, 30, of Middlebury, from leaving Weaver’s house on County Road 29 at 12:52 a.m.

As Finch was backing his pickup truck out through the yard, it struck Weaver and drug him. Finch then left the scene, police said, leaving Weaver with head and lower body injuries.

Early Sunday morning, a Memorial Hospital nursing supervisor said Weaver remained in critical condition.

The accident remains under investigation.
