Slow computers are blamed by Indiana Department of Workforce Development officials for the problem people across the state encountered Monday morning. Those trying to access their unemployment money through their debit cards found they could not.

State officials said the department processed and posted nearly 200,000 individual deposits to nearly 100,000 claimants by 4 p.m. Those on unemployment receive two deposits each week — one for their weekly unemployment benefit and a second one, the $25 increase from federal stimulus legislation.

“This (was) strictly a computer processing glitch. The money has been sent to the accounts, but the computers (that deposit money into each account) are slow,” said Marc Lotter, Indiana Department of Workforce Development spokesman.

The department “apologizes to our claimants if this computer delay caused any hardship,” per a statement from the department.
