SOUTH BEND — A 35-year-old woman who was arrested for the second time while out on bond from jail will have to remain in jail until her trial to protect herself and the community, a judge ordered Thursday.

Maria Stancati, a former Elkhart teacher, was arrested last week and charged with driving while intoxicated with priors, a Class D felony. At the time, she was out on a $5,000 cash bond from the jail on a charge of dealing meth within 1,000 feet of school property.

Stancati also faces another charge of driving while intoxicated with priors, a Class D felony, stemming from her arrest in August.

She appeared in court Thursday while free on $750 cash bond from the jail.

"Bond is a matter of grace," Judge Jerome Frese told Stancati.

"Your cases are just building up," the judge also said. "And reasonable people have to be concerned for you."

Stancati was handcuffed inside the courtroom and will remain in jail until at least her trial date, May 11.

Stancati’s twin sister, Michelle Stancati, also faces charges of dealing meth within 1,000 feet of a school from her arrest in November in South Bend. She was again charged with dealing meth last month in Elkhart County.

Michelle Stancati was a teacher at North Side Middle School in Elkhart, while Maria was a teacher at Elkhart Memorial High School.
