SOUTH BEND — A homeowner sustained burns to her hands during a fire that consumed her home and garage, fire officials said.

The homeowner was home when the fire began shortly after 11 a.m. Friday in the 1600 block of Arcadia Avenue, and attempted to remove a car from the garage. She was advised to retreat by a neighbor who happens to be a South Bend firefighter.

The homeowner refused treatment of her burns at the scene, according to a South Bend Tribune reporter.

Additional responders were called to the fire, but left when it was under control.
